Life styles to be changed

Your reason for snoring could be something more complex and it could also be a combination of factors, which all need to be looked at and life-styles have to be changed.

Smoking, alcohol and drugs

Smokers are more likely to snore than non smokers. Smoking irritates the lining of the nose and can lead to a build-up of catarrh and congestion in the nasal passage which leads to sleeping on your back and breathing through your mouth and the result is more snoring.

Alcohol and sleeping pills also have an effect on snoring. Alcohol is a depressant which causes the muscles to relax, including the nose and throat muscles which lead to a narrowing of the airways and snoring. The blood of healthy individuals normally has 100 per cent oxygen saturation. In snorers the levels are 89 per cent and among snorers who have been drinking, oxygen levels drop to 73 per cent. Without a constant and regular supply of oxygen in your blood, all tissues will suffer, most significantly your hart and your brain, leading to heart attacks and strokes.

Some sleeping pills have a similar effect. Valium for instance , a benzodiazepine, is known to be a muscle relaxant and , as we have seen, relaxed nose and throat muscles lead to snoring. Most of the hypnotics or sleeping pills that are prescribed can make snoring and sleep apnea worse, because they depress breathing to some degree and reduce muscle tone. This includes the pills described to reduce anxiety and anxiety related insomnia.

So snoring is also a lifestyle issue and lifestyle factors are usually implicated even when there also turns out to be a physical reason for snoring.

Age, weight and sex

Age, weight and sex all have some influence. The older you are the more likely you are to snore. This is because the muscles in your nose and throat become less efficient when you grow older.

Overweight is a major contributing factor. These people seem to sleep more often on their back which increases chances for snoring considerably, because the tongue and uvula fall back in the throat and narrow the air passage. For men a color size of more than 17 or excess fat round the neck, are a guarantee for snoring.

Men snore twice as much as women. The reasons are unclear.

But all in all, please remember that in 80% of all cases of snoring a blockage of the nose entrance is the cause. Probably the best device to keep the nose entrance open is a product , called ”No Snoring More Air” developed by a group of ENT specialists in Germany . This anti snore product also helps against apnoea as it has a similar effect as the CPAP treatment, allowing more air into the system. It has been tested in their practice for years and was introduced in Germany in 2000. In the years that followed introduction took place in other countries in Europe and in The USA.
